WOODSTOCK, Conn., July 28, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — All eyes will be riveted on the action-packed Summer X-Games when they roll into Los Angeles July 28-31. Athletes from all over the world will compete for medals and prize money in extreme sports such as Skateboarding, BMX, Motocross and the X-Games newest event Endurocross.

“Sports enthusiasts of all ages will be watching these competitors to try out their latest moves,” said Dave Sherman, business development manager for PORON Performance Cushioning and Impact Materials. “To help give these athletes the confidence they need to push the limits of big air and new tricks, it’s important they are outfitted with proper protective gear.”

While impact protection is crucial, athletes do not want to sacrifice mobility and comfort that’s required for these activities. With today’s newest designs, they no longer have to. The latest equipment is made with thinner and lighter-weight, contouring materials such as PORON®XRD™ extreme impact technology, which can seamlessly be used in a variety of products without hampering design or style.

“The cool factor in extreme sports is very important.” added Sherman. “Protective gear needs to not only be functional, but also has to look good or be easily worn under everyday clothing. In the end, impact protective gear is only useful when it’s being worn.”

Sherman recommends the following tips when looking for protective gear for extreme sports.

  • A proper fitting helmet is a must. Select one that is CPSC certified and read the manufacturer’s warranty and care instructions. Many helmets used for biking, skateboarding and rollerblading are made with EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam, which is a great one-impact foam. But if dropped or damaged it may need to be replaced.

  • Elbow and knee pads provide a protective cushion against unforgiving pavement and dirt. For example, form-fitting knee and elbow pads from G-Form are specifically designed to flex with the body to ensure complete protection.

  • Skateboarders and BMX bikers will want to choose a durable shoe with an impact-absorbing insole or heel cushion.

  • Endurocross expert, Jesse Ziegler with KLIM Technical Riding Gear advises new dirt-bike riders to ride in all the necessary gear to get the proper feel of maneuvering the bike with it on. That includes helmet, goggles, gloves and boots along with an impact-absorbing base layer, and abrasion-resistant jacket and pant.

  • Action sports require a lot of intense movement, so select protective gear that is moisture-wicking, comfortable and moves freely with your body.

“Good protective gear helps take the worry out of getting hurt so you can concentrate on your extreme sport,” concluded Sherman. “It’s all about staying in the game.”
