SAN DIEGO, June 28, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Former U.S. Marine-turned-journalist, Marian Anthony reunited with his command, 1st Marine Division on May 13th, 2011 in Sangin, Afghanistan. As one of the few remaining Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan, this war zone became Anthony’s refuge as he reported daily from enemy lines.

The result is over one-hundred hours of raw footage including inspiring interviews with Marines and Afghan nationals. Clips are currently being edited for release on Anthony’s blog, www.holidayinafghanistan.com.

Setting Anthony’s coverage apart from that of mainstream media is his empathy, point-of-view, unrestricted access, and exclusivity to the area of operations with 1/5 under the command of Lt. Col Thomas Savage.

Soldiers were initially shocked to learn that the former 0331 infantry Marine had substituted his allotted vacation time to voluntarily reunite with his old unit and capture the inside story of one of the toughest fights in U.S. – Afghan history. Merging seamlessly back into the unit with his comrades-in-arms Anthony was invited back into the inner circle as a Marine, a place where outside journalist are rarely given sanction.

According to Anthony’s interview with Staff Sergeant Koehn, “The only reason we are talking, is because you are a Marine. If you were a typical reporter, I would have walked away.”

After Anthony returned to his Carlsbad, CA home on June 14th, he began posting several of the interviews on his blog. Within hours, family members of deployed Marines began flocking to www.holidayinafghanistan.com to catch a glimpse of the inside story, and see the growing collection of raw footage.

Anthony is currently working on a documentary and book about the life-changing experience.
